Sal's Pizza is one of my favorite guilty pleasures. I'm sure some of you have seen the cheesy commercials (which often air during the Phantom Gourmet - need I say more) about their "famous" 19-inch, 3 lb. pizza. Whenever these commercials air, Bret jokes around about how this place sounds terrible and finally I had to confess that I actually am a fan of Sal's Pizza. Let me explain. There is a Sal's Pizza in Tewksbury, my hometown, and I used to go there with my friends to grab a slice now and then. But my real affection for Sal's Pizza came when I was in high school and we would head up to Hampton Beach. During our late nights "cruising the strip" (yes, that is as terrible as it sounds), we would stop off at Sal's Pizza for a slice before heading home. I think for me, the fond memories attached to Sal's Pizza is the reason why I like the place so much!
When I first learned that Sal's Pizza would be opening a location in Boston, I was really excited. It has been over a decade since I last had a slice of Sal's Pizza and to be honest, I couldn't really remember what it tasted like!
Located next to a Suffolk University dorm across from the Boston Common, Sal's was busy when I came in. It is a small space with no tables - just counters to lean on while you are grabbing a slice. There were lots of different options but I decided to go with a simple slice of their Margharita pizza. They heated it up for me, I threw some crushed red pepper flakes on it and I was on my way. I decided to take my pizza to the Common to enjoy some of the beautiful weather while I ate my dinner.
Um, wow. When I took the pizza out, I was shocked by its size. I remembered the slices being large but I didn't realize that a slice was actually two slices of pizza, which is actually a quarter of their giant whole pizzas! To give you a comparison, this how large the pizza was compared to the size of my hand!
The pizza itself was really nice. There was a thin crust topped with a sweet Pomodoro sauce, fresh mozzarella and fresh basil. I tried the crust and it was a bit too chewy for me. I made the decision to not eat the crust because it was just way too filling.
I think that they will do very well with their location and their prices. My giant slice of pizza (which is really two normal slices) came out to a whopping $3.40. I can imagine that this will go over very well with the student population. All in all, I did like Sal's Pizza although I do think that perhaps that my memory of Sal's is better than the real thing. Still, I think Sal's Pizza will remain one of my guilty pleasures.
