Bailey & Sage: Hold the Dressing

One of my favorite Boston-area food blogs is Boston Restaurant Talk.  This blog highlights all of the openings and unfortunate closings of Boston-area restaurants.   A few months ago, I read the Bailey & Sage, a new lunch spot, was opening up on State Street just a few blocks away from my office.  On Thursday, the post was updated that Bailey & Sage was now open and I couldn't wait to check it out the next day.

I didn't jot down the address of the place but as I headed down State Street, I soon came across this sandwich board and I knew I found it!

Bailey & Sage had some clean aesthetics and the place was definitely a buzz.  There weren't any seats in the restaurant but there were probably at least twenty people in there all waiting in line.  I wanted to snap some photos of the interior but I'm always hesitant when a place is super busy.  I'm not sure how comfortable strangers would feel having their photo taken during their lunch break!

The folks at Bailey & Sage were all super friendly in handing out menus to peruse and directing us to either the salad or sandwich line.  I knew that I wanted a salad so I headed over to the salad line.  While I was waiting in line, I looked at the paper menu and decided on a Southwest Salad.  The paper menu clearly stated "choice of dressing" and I was enthusiastic to try out their honey lime vinaigrette.  As I watched an employee make my salad, I noticed that she added a creamy dressing to the salad without asking me what dressing I wanted (or if I wanted it on the side).  I looked up at the menu board on the wall and realized that their signature salads all come with a specific dressing.  In this case, it was a Chipotle ranch.  I didn't want to make a big deal about it and make her start over but I was bummed because this was not what I really wanted.  Nonetheless, I let her pack up my salad, I paid and I was on my way.

I got back to my office and I absolutely adored the packaging.

I don't know why but I think Chinese-style takeout boxes are adorable!

They gave me both chopsticks and a fork for my salad.  I was a bit confused and amused.  I couldn't tell if this was to go along with the takeout box theme or if they really wanted me to eat the salad with chopsticks.

Nonetheless, I opened up and dug in....with a fork.

Overall, the salad was pretty good.  Even though it comes in such a small box, there is a lot of salad in here!  The Southwest Salad had romaine lettuce, chunks of grilled chicken breast, black beans, corn, tomato, Vermont pepper jack cheese and crispy onions.  The salad was definitely over-dressed and made the salad a bit soggy.  This was disappointing as some of the crispy onions lacked the crunch I craved.  But the pepper jack cheese was definitely a plus and added nice little spicy bites.  Although I ate most of my salad, I think I would have appreciated it more if a lighter hand was used on the dressing.

I'll definitely head back to Bailey & Sage to give it another try.  In addition to their signature salads, you can also make your own chopped salad and they have a decent menu of sandwiches too.

Bailey & Sage is located at 103 State Street, Boston, MA.  The menu lists a website at BaileyandSage.com but this website does not seem to be operating at this time.
