We flew in a little later than expected to Key West on Saturday with a flight delay in Atlanta. We checked into our amazing hotel, the Casa Marina Resort, and headed off to a pre-wedding party hosted by the couple at Schooner Wharf. We had the entire roof deck reserved where the beer was flowing, the conch fritters were plentiful and there was a beautiful sunset.
The following day, we had breakfast at the famous Blue Heaven, which everyone has raved about. I had the most delicious "BLT" eggs Benedict with bacon, grilled lobster, and grilled tomato. I was so in love with this dish that I didn't mind that they didn't serve alcohol before noon and that there were wild roosters roaming around the courtyard. If you know my fear of birds, you'll know that this is no easy feat!
We walked around a bit to see the sights...
And then we got some pool-time before heading to this gorgeous wedding on the beach...
After a really fun wedding that flew by way too fast, the following morning, we did a long drive to Sarasota to visit B's great-aunt and her adorable dog Oscar.
She is an absolute riot and we had a great few days in Sarasota including a visit to Siesta Beach and the John and Mable Ringling Museum.
We were sad to say good-bye as we headed to the Villages to visit my aunt and uncle. We took a pretty drive on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and also saw the Tropicana Field.
And finally we arrived in the Villages. It was honestly a really interesting place - a complete town created for senior citizens. It reminded me of Main Street in Disney!
My aunt and uncle have lived here for awhile so they showed us all of their sights but let us do our own thing every night by 7 PM. This resulted in us having a few cocktails since the drinks are super cheap (with happy hour specials) and they encourage public drinking!
On our last night, my aunt and uncle treated us to a really wonderful dinner at the Legacy Restaurant at the Nancy Lopez Country Club to celebrate our engagement. We feasted on escargot, Moet champagne, roasted duck and bananas foster. This was truly a memorable meal.
By the time we returned home on Friday evening, we were feeling relaxed and well-rested. Plus, B and I were both happy to meet each other's respective family members that we probably wouldn't have met before our wedding otherwise. This weekend has been low key but we are getting back into the swing of things and I've got lots to blog about already!
