When the first Sex and the City movie came out, my friend R organized a fabulous girls night out that started out with dinner and drinks at Kingston Station beforehand. When we heard that Sex and the City 2 was coming out, R immediately put together an invite for another girls night titled, "Keep Calm and Get 'Carried' Away." Cute, right? Even though the girls night out was planned the Friday night before I flew out to Florida early the next morning, I couldn't say no and was totally excited for an excuse to get dolled up, drink too many cocktails, and drool over the fashion in the movie (even if the plot would probably be non-existent).
But before we got to the movie, we decided to have dinner and cocktails beforehand at Teatro, right next door to the movie theater. Because of Teatro's convenient location, it is a popular spot to grab a bite before a movie or before catching a show in the nearby Theater District. Even though I often go to movies at the Boston Common movie theater, I have actually never tried Teatro out and I was excited to finally do so before seeing SATC2.
When I first walked into the restaurant, it was packed with women who were all looking absolutely fabulous - obviously heading to see the movie as well. Thankfully R made a reservation way in advance and we had a wonderful corner table waiting for us in the front of the restaurant. R had got there a little early and took the liberty to order a garlic white bean spread, which was incredibly addictive. The white bean spread had nice hints of garlic and olive oil in the white bean puree and went well with the sliced French baguette in the complimentary bread basket. In fact, I liked it better than the hummus that accompanied the bread basket.
While we munched on the bread and perused the menu, we ordered some cocktails to start the night off on the right note.
Although Teatro was offering SATC-themed Moet cocktails, I opted for something off of their regular cocktail menu. I decided to start out with the Cavalera which was a Brazilian cachaca, prosecco and lemon juice cocktail. Even though the restaurant was obviously aware that it was the opening weekend for SATC2, the restaurant was terribly understaffed and it took a really long time for us to receive our cocktails. However, the cocktail was worth the wait with elements of both sweet and sour.
Thankfully we had the bread basket to tide us over because the food took even longer to reach our table. This was a combination of both an understaffed restaurant and a server who appeared to ignore us anytime we tried to grab him. Despite the wait, we all agreed that our meals were all really delicious. I ordered a simple flatbread white pizza with hot peppers and sea salt. The ingredients were all really simple but I absolutely loved the contrast of the sweet and spicy hot peppers with the sea salt. The flatbread was grilled perfectly cripsy and I enjoyd spreading the delicious white bean puree spread on the crust.
During dinner, I had another cocktail - the Summer Gimlet. This drink had Stoli Gala Apple vodka, cranberry syrup and lemon juice. This cocktail was really refreshing and not too sweet, although it again took a very long time to reach our table.
While I enjoyed the food and drinks, I was puzzled by the long waits in service. Teatro prides itself on being a place to grab a bite before a movie or a show, yet it painfully ignored the fact that its patrons need to leave at a certain time to make said show. Although I enjoyed my meal, I'm not sure that I will return to this restaurant before a movie when I have never had this problem at other local restaurants which also offer pre-movie/theater dining.
In the end though, any meal is made enjoyable by the company you keep and that is what made this meal an especially wonderful one. I thankfully remembered to ask our server to take a photo, even though it ended up being a very dark one.
All in all, we had a fabulous time catching up over dinner and an even better time at the movies when we met up with a few other girlfriends who couldn't join us for a bite beforehand. As for the movie, it provided some fantastic fashion and chick flick fun although not much more than that in terms of an actual storyline. But for a girls night out, it was absolutely perfect.
Thanks again R for planning such a wonderful night!
Will you be seeing or have you seen SATC2? Will you be anything special to celebrate a movie about female friendship, fashion and fun?
