While many people have been swept by the cupcake craze, I'm not one of them. Sure, I like cupcakes as much as the next person but I'll never eagerly seek out a cupcake shop or crave cupcakes. All that being said, when I first got word over a year ago that Todd English was helping his daughter Isabelle open up a cupcake shop in my neighborhood, I was definitely excited. I thought that a cupcake shop would be a perfect addition to Beacon Hill's cozy neighborhood feel of boutiques and antique shops.
After many delays, Isabelle's Curly Cakes finally opened up this past year and I finally got a chance to check it out this past weekend.
Everything about this place screams adorable - from the pink and brown colors, photos of children eating cupcakes, and hand-written board menu.
It was hard to choose between the different cupcakes but Bret and I finally decided upon two to split. We managed to get one of the two tables in this cozy shop and dug right in.
My choice was the Apple Streusel cupcake. This buttermilk apple cupcake was a bit dry and I found the brown sugar buttercream frosting to be overly sweet. But the apple pie filling in the cupcake and the miniature apple tart on top of the cupcake was seriously delicious and helped balance out the sweetness of the frosting.
Bret went with the Boston Cream cupcake and it was definitely a lot more moist. It tasted, well, like a Boston cream pie and I loved the light whipped chocolate frosting.
I am confident that Isabelle's Curly Cakes will do well in this neighborhood, especially with the high tourist foot traffic in Beacon Hill. There are only two tables and six seats so you should plan on taking the cupcakes to go. The cupcakes can be carried out in adorable take-out boxes.
Welcome to the neighborhood Isabelle's Curly Cakes!
Isabelle's Curly Cakes is located at 81 Charles Street, Boston, MA.
